The capacity of Hammelburg Major Training Area is insufficient to satisfy all training and exercise requirements. As a consequence, the Infantry School and, in particular, the Bundeswehr UN Training Centre frequently use WILDFLECKEN Major Training Area.

Wildflecken Major Training Area is a former American training area that is, with its size of 73 square kilometres, almost twice as large as Hammelburg Major Training Area. It is situated approximately 30 kilometres to the north of Hammelburg and comprises various large firing ranges and manoeuvre areas.

Special training facility:

• the so-called "Housing Area", a former residential area for the US Armed Forces.
